Alvord Family to be Honored at UW Medicine HMC Gala

Harborview Salutes 2009 Mission of Caring Award Recipients

the Alvord, Gerlich, and Rhodes Families

In 2004 Dr. Ellsworth C. "Buster" and Mrs. Nancy Alvord established the Mission of Caring Endowment for Uncompensated Care, a fund that helps take care of people who need health care, but who cannot afford it.

The Alvords’ extraordinary gift was the inspiration for an award: Harborview’s Mission of Caring Award. This award is given annually, at the UW Medicine Salute Harborview Gala, to a person or group whose leadership in the community epitomizes the spirit of Harborview’s mission: serving everyone who needs health care, regardless of their ability to pay.

On February 28th, HMC will honor the 2009 recipients of the Harborview Mission of Caring Award: the Alvords, and their children and grandchildren in the Alvord, Gerlich, and Rhodes families.

Giving back to the community is part of the Alvord family ethic, and the Alvords and their extended families have made contributions to UW Medicine and the University of Washington for many years.

During UW Medicine’s recent campaign, for instance, the Alvord family gave generously to Harborview Medical Center, especially to the hospital’s Mission of Caring Fund. And in all their giving — to research, to faculty support funds, and, most recently, to establish the UW Medicine Alvord Brain Tumor Center — the Alvord, Gerlich, and Rhodes families are providing a great example of philanthropy for the University of Washington and the entire Puget Sound region.
