Welcome to 815 Mercer

UW Medicine at South Lake Union

UW Medicine’s new biotechnology and medical research hub in the South Lake Union area of Seattle has expanded to include a newly renovated, four-story, 105, 000 square foot research laboratory facility known as the “Brotman” building.  The facility houses biomedical research centers that cross organizational and disciplinary lines.  Among the current centers located here are the Cardiovascular and Regenerative Biology Center and the Center for Translational Medicine in Women’s Health, a multi-faceted effort including ground-breaking work on tumor vaccines.  Both centers are examples of a new paradigm in biomedical research at UW, one that attempts to solve a particular problem without being constrained by departments or disciplines.

“South Lake Union is key to UW Medicine’s ability to lead a significant portion of the nation’s biomedical research enterprise well into the 21st Century,” said Dr. Paul Ramsey, dean of the UW School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs.  “The opportunities for research collaboration across organizational and disciplinary lines are already enormous here, and the future holds much promise for the UW Medicine to develop new interdisciplinary initiatives.”

An expansion of the current facility is already underway with construction of two new five-story buildings scheduled to be completed on the site by mid-2008.
