Pathology Residency Training Program University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals
Program Description

Training in Clinical Pathology

Dr. Wayne Chandler is the Director of the Clinical Pathology Residency Training Program.

First Year CP Training. The first year of Clinical Pathology training is at the University of Washington Medical Center. The year comprises a tightly organized full year of study, beginning with a 10-week course (lectures, discussions and laboratory exercises) designed to introduce the trainee to the breadth of the field of clinical pathology. The introductory course covers basic material in blood banking, coagulation, immunology, urinalysis, clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology, parasitology, mycology, virology, molecular pathology, biostatistics and laboratory computer applications. Rotations follow through these laboratories:

  1. Microbiology (six weeks)
  2. Virology (two weeks)
  3. Chemistry method development project (eleven weeks)
  4. Hematology (seven weeks)
  5. Blood Center (three weeks)
  6. Coagulation (four weeks)
  7. Immunology (four weeks)
  8. Laboratory testing - interpretative course (two weeks)

Residents rotate singly or in pairs through these laboratories, where they experience a variety of types of training: lectures, hands-on benchwork, study problems, patient-care interactions, ward rounds, method development, etc. These rotations utilize the clinical laboratories at the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and Puget Sound Blood Center. Dr. Chandler instructs a course in laboratory management every 2 years.

Second Year CP Training. Residents tailor the second year to meet their specific career goals. During the first 6 months, second-year residents gain graded responsibility in management decisions as acting directors of subspecialty lab sections. The remainder of this year is spent in either AP or CP electives.

The resident may spend the year developing skills in one or more areas of the clinical laboratory or receive a more generalized experience at one of the community hospitals associated with the program. For residents who require a 5th year of training, a number of options for additional training in clinical pathology are available. These include fellowships in clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology, and virology.

Second year Clinical Pathology residents train at UWMC, Harborview, and the VA.
