Program Description

TRAINING IN EXPERIMENTAL PATHOLOGY

The University of Washington Department of Pathology is among the world’s leading research pathology departments with expertise in cell and molecular biology as well as all other areas of experimental pathology. For many years the department has been among the top five U.S. pathology departments in NIH funding. Technologies in the department include molecular biology, genetics, protein chemistry, and proteoglycan chemistry. Areas of faculty research interest include:

Aging

Hematopathology

Cardiovascular Disease

Neuropathology

Developmental Biology

Prostate Cancer Genetics

DNA Replication and Repair

Renal Disease

Environmental Pathology

Somatic Cell Genetics

Gastrointestinal Pathology

Tumor Biology

Genetic Pathology

Research opportunities, moreover, are not limited to the faculty in this department. One of our features is the open and collaborative atmosphere within the University research community, which includes the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Pathology residents and other research fellows are most welcome at various seminars, courses and guest lectures that occur throughout the year. All of our training grants are interdepartmental, and residents are encouraged to enter post-doctoral fellowships in all departments of the University or the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Support for postdoctoral training is available in most laboratories in the department, through National Research Service Awards, Program Training Grants, or individual grants or research funds.
