The combined AP/CP training tracks have two forms that provide identical experiences; they differ only in the sequence of rotations -- some residents begin in Laboratory Medicine, most begin in Anatomic Pathology. Straight AP and CP residents begin their three-year program by completing their respective two-year tracks. For the third year, residents fulfill their training requirement by functioning as chief resident at UWMC, receiving subspecialty instruction or pursuing primary pathology research. The Program Director guides the residents in selection of this third-year option.

We currently have 24 residency positions distributed between the combined AP/CP program and the tracks of straight AP or CP only. We usually recruit five residents each year. In addition, the program has positions for advanced training in pathology subspecialties and experimental pathology.

An additional year of training is available in many subspecialty areas of pathology; this year can serve as the credentialing year (or “5th year”) for Board certification in AP/CP. Summarized below are various one and two year fellowship programs. In addition, there are multiple research fellowships in a wide spectrum of basic science labs and research programs. Detailed information about our research programs is available from the Residency Coordinator.
