The first official residency training class began January 1, 1959 and since then we have trained more than 480 residents and fellows who practice in the community and academic centers around the globe. Once you have completed your training and graduated from our program, we hope that you will stay connected with us. - Richard Mertens, MD PhD ('82) has received the College of American Pathologist's Pathologist Spotlight Service Award for his efforts above and beyond in service to his community and patients through the practice of pathology.
- Corinne Fligner, MD ('83) received the UW Medical Center's Medical Staff Teamwork Leadership and Caring Award for May 2009. Dr. Fligner was recognized for her compassionate, patient care approach to a response for a patient wishing to bury a transplanted organ in keeping with religious and cultural beliefs.
- John Howard, MD ('87) has been elected President of the National Association of Medical Examiners for 2009. Gregory Schmunk, MD ('89) is Secretary/Treasurer. Eric Kiesel, MD ('87) is a member of the Board of Directors.
- 2008-2009 ACLPS Representation - several of our alumni are active in a variety of committees including Dan Sabath, MD PhD ('92) as Chair for the Membership Committee (2008-2011); Malek Kamoun, MD PhD ('80), 2008 Local Co-Host on the Program and Finance Committee; Mike Astion, MD PhD ('93), Nominating and Awards Committee (2006-2009); Andy Hoofnagle, MD PhD ('07), Publications Committee (2008-2011); and Kendall Crookston, MD PhD ('99), Ad Hoc Education Committee.
- 2009 USCAP and Society of Pediatric Pathology Presentations - a summary of presentations at the upcoming meeting in March by our alumni. Enjoy!
- Department of Pathology Seminars. Do you work near the UW campus? Are you planning a visit to the Seattle area? You are invited to attend our seminars and conferences. A current schedule is located on the Department of Pathology website.
- UWMC Physician Liaison Program - establishes and promotes positive relationships between UW Medical Center, referring physicians and their staff particularly in the WWAMI region of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. The liaison, Laura Matheson serves as a personal contact to assist with questions or problems.

- Networking with your UW colleagues. The Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine maintain web directories of clinical and research faculty.
In early June each year we celebrate the graduation of residents and fellows from our training program. Some will continue with subspecialty training. Some will pursue their research interests, which may have begun in their undergraduate years. Many will begin community practice. And sure some will enter academic medicine.
