GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MOLECULAR BASIS OF DISEASESeattle - The Emerald CityFinancial Support for Pathology Graduate StudentsThe department helps students obtain financial support in the form of research training fellowships from National Institutes of Health training grants, individual faculty research grants, and through University allocations to the department for teaching support. In 2006-2007 the stipend level for graduate students will be $25,008 per year plus tuition and insurance. The Pathology Graduate Program secures tuition and stipend support for the first year of study. During subsequent years, each student's Thesis Advisor has responsibility for arranging this support. In the past, Pathology graduate students have been supported throughout their course of study. However, although a Thesis Advisor has agreed to take responsibility for a student, the ultimate responsibility is the student's own. Students should understand that even with the best of intentions, a Thesis Advisor may encounter difficulty maintaining funding. Graduate students must actively participate in understanding the mechanism of their support and work with the Thesis Advisor to seek backup funding if current funding appears uncertain. The Graduate Program Director and other members of the Graduate Program will provide advice and assistance in these circumstances, but financial support cannot be guaranteed. The Graduate Program will always attempt to identify mechanisms and/or seek short term support during emergencies. In the past, the department has always been able to accommodate the support needs of its graduate students.
